250, 000 of sickle cell births occur in Sub-Saharan Africa per year

What is Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a hereditary disorder causing the deformation of normal red blood cells into sickle-shaped ones. In East Africa, particularly Kenya, the prevalence of SCD is intensified, mirroring malaria endemicity. Approximately 20-25 million people globally live with SCD, with 12-15 million in Africa. In Sub-Saharan Africa, childhood mortality due to SCD ranges from 50- 90%, resulting in approximately 1,000 daily SCD births, and over half do not survive past the age of five. In Kenya, 14,000 children are born annually with a mere 5% survival rate, with regions like Kisumu experiencing an 80% mortality rate before age five. The annual economic burden of SCD in Kenya is estimated at KES 1.6 billion for the 14,000 cases.

What we do

At Save the Sicklers, our commitment is centered on making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families impacted by sickle cell disease (SCD) in Kenya. Through a multifaceted approach, we undertake various initiatives and programs aimed at awareness, support, advocacy, and empowerment.

STS ThermoSoothe™

In the ongoing battle against Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), Save the Sicklers Organization has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative known as STS ThermoSoothe. This innovative project aims to tackle the chronic pain endured by SCD patients through a unique combination of thermal therapy and gentle massage techniques. By harnessing the power of heat and soothing touch, STS ThermoSoothe offers targeted pain relief, improved blood circulation, and enhanced relaxation for individuals grappling with the debilitating effects of vaso-occlusive crises. At the heart of STS ThermoSoothe lies the ethos embodied by Save the Sicklers' slogan, "Strength in Unity, Hope in Healing." With a focus on unity and collaboration, this project represents a collective effort to alleviate the suffering of those living with SCD. By fostering a sense of solidarity within the community, STS ThermoSoothe aims to empower patients and caregivers alike, providing a beacon of hope amidst the challenges of managing this complex condition. The benefits of STS ThermoSoothe extend far beyond mere pain relief. Through its non-invasive approach, the device offers a safe and convenient solution for addressing the multifaceted needs of SCD patients. Its portable design ensures that individuals can access relief wherever they may be, whether at home, work, or in medical settings. By promoting self-care and independence, STS ThermoSoothe embodies the spirit of resilience and empowerment that defines the SCD community. Furthermore, STS ThermoSoothe is not just a technological innovation—it is a cost-effective solution with the potential to alleviate the financial burden associated with managing SCD. By reducing reliance on expensive medications and healthcare services, this project underscores the importance of sustainability and efficiency in healthcare delivery. In conclusion, STS ThermoSoothe stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of Save the Sicklers Organization to improving the lives of SCD patients. With its promise of strength, unity, and hope in healing, this initiative represents a beacon of light in the fight against Sickle Cell Disease, offering comfort, relief, and empowerment to all those affected by this challenging condition.

Save The Sicklers Programs

Save the Sicklers is dedicated to advancing healthcare for individuals with sickle cell disease through three core programs: Innovation and Research, Awareness and Outreach, and Nutrition and Agriculture.

The Innovation and Research program focuses on developing cutting-edge solutions, such as the ThermoSoothe device, to improve the management and treatment of sickle cell disease. Through rigorous research and continuous innovation, this program aims to provide practical, life-changing tools that address the unique challenges faced by those living with the condition.

The Awareness and Outreach program is committed to educating communities about sickle cell disease, dispelling myths, and promoting early diagnosis and treatment. By raising awareness, the program seeks to reduce stigma, enhance public understanding, and encourage support for those affected by the disease. Outreach initiatives also aim to connect patients with essential resources and support networks.

Lastly, the Nutrition and Agriculture program emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition in managing sickle cell disease. This program explores sustainable agricultural practices that can provide patients with access to nutrient-rich foods, which are vital for maintaining health and preventing complications. By integrating nutrition education with agricultural development, Save the Sicklers is empowering individuals and communities to improve their overall well-being in the face of sickle cell disease.
